bikeI live in the Madison area and I like to think of myself as a devoted biker.  I started out biking for the exercise, okay let me say it, I wanted to lose some weight.  Some of my friends said I could lose the weight and have fun at the same time.  So I started biking and to this day (even though the weight is long since gone) I enjoy it tremendously.

I often get into conversations with people about the money I spent to get what I consider a good, quality bike.  Most people cannot imagine spending more than $100.  I tell them I commonly refer to these bikes as “Mart” bikes because they can be purchased at your local Wal-Mart, or K-Mart, etc.  These bikes are designed to look like quality bikes but are not intended to be actually be ridden any distance.  If $100 is the amount that is in your budget, you are better off investing in a quality, used bike that may be 5-6 years old.  You will enjoy riding this bike and will come to understand the difference between a “Quality” and “Mart” bike.

Below I have listed some suggestions that can guide you on your search:

1. Ride as many bikes as you can to determine the correct style that is right for you.  Adult bikes can be divided up into a variety of categories including mountain, road, commuter, comfort, hybrid, and cruiser.

2. Know where you want to ride the bike and purchase a bike to fit that or those needs (i.e. don’t purchase a mountain bike if you are never actually going to mountain bike.)

3. Go to a place that has a good variety of bikes to choose from.  The right salesperson will be able to answer all of your questions and help you purchase the right bike for you.  He or she should be able to talk about the features of the bike, the correct size you need, and tell you about added accessories that will make your bike riding experience more enjoyable.  In Madison we are lucky to have many quality bike shops in the area.

So, whatever your reason is to start riding, just get riding!  It is a relaxing, comfortable way to spend some time outdoors.  See you out there!
